Next Thursday, July 21, we'll be hosting Weyerhaeuser Family Day at the Lane County Fair in Eugene, Oregon. If you're in the area, we invite you to join us for a local summer tradition filled with rides, games, live music and fair food, and we’ll be honoring all military personnel, first responders and seniors with $2.00 admission all day!
The team at our lumber mill in Plymouth, N.C., was proud to help build a beautiful new home for an Eastern Carolina mother and her three children by donating $15,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Beaufort County through the Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund. Welcome home!
We’re honored to be named as a co-recipient of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative 2022 SFI® Leadership in Conservation Award for our work on the collaborative project, “Working Forests for Birds: Informing Management and Measuring Conservation Value for Birds and Biodiversity in the Central Appalachians.” Our West Virginia Timberlands team joined collaborators National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Appalachian Mountains Joint Venture, American Bird Conservancy, West Virginia Division of Natural Resources and West Virginia University on this project focused on recovering critical habitat in managed forests in West Virginia for three at-risk bird species: the golden-winged warbler, the cerulean warbler, and the wood thrush.
Cool Springs Environmental Education Center provides a great hands-on opportunity to learn about forestry, ecology and environmental issues. Located along the Neuse River about six miles from New Bern, North Carolina, this 1,700-acre outdoor classroom is great for students of all ages. We began operating in North Carolina in 1957 and today manage three lumber mills and more than 500,000 acres of timberland in the state. That experience provides the basis for Cool Springs, a working forest with school lessons about forestry working in harmony with wildlife habitat, air quality, water quality and recreational activities. Virtually every forest ecotype of eastern North Carolina can be found here. We offer the opportunity for teachers to design their own field trip with activities for all ages. If you’re interested in learning more about plants, animals and their habitats, please contact us today. You can also look for updates on our Facebook page.
After a planned volunteer project was delayed for two years due to COVID, staff from our Mississippi/Louisiana Timberlands recently came together as a team to work on a home for Habitat for Humanity of the Pine Belt. We have a longstanding partnership with Habitat for Humanity International, and we are looking to complete 10-plus builds in our operating communities across North America in the next year.
During a recent interview with Jim Cramer on Mad Money, Weyerhaeuser President and CEO Devin Stockfish highlighted our first-quarter earnings, the value of investing in timberlands during periods of inflation, the success of our new dividend structure, and how our environmental leadership and commitment to sustainability continue to set our company apart.
Each year, our forest management and mill operations participate in rigorous internal and external audits to maintain compliance with Sustainable Forestry Initiative® standards, and during the 2021 audit season we once again met 100 percent compliance across the company. “Our customers — from wholesale to retail — and consumers in general, demand forest products from sustainable, responsible and non-controversial sources,” says Chad Leatherwood, environmental manager and companywide SFI® Fiber Sourcing program manager. “SFI is the certification standard we use to demonstrate this commitment.”
Each fire season, wildland firefighters risk their lives to protect our forests and communities, and Weyerhaeuser recognizes the impact fighting these fires can have on the mental health of first responders and their families. We’ve partnered with Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance to create an online resource hub that includes content especially designed for wildland firefighters, including mental health tips, educational articles and contacts for support groups and counselors located in the Pacific Northwest (including B.C.). Addressing mental health challenges without stigma is critical to keeping firefighters safe, and the Fighting Fires Together campaign is designed to provide an important platform to amplify education and resources available for wildland firefighters and their families.
Last year, Weyerhaeuser worked with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries’ Scenic Rivers program to remove a long-abandoned wooden bridge and help restore Bayou Dorcheat to its natural state. Over 80 years, the bridge had deteriorated and become a navigation and safety hazard for local recreationists. “We want to be a good neighbor and do the right thing,” says Mark Woods, a land use forester in northern Louisiana. “Residents from Webster Parrish and the region can now fish, canoe and kayak on a bayou that’s free from a derelict old bridge.”
Since 2006, our Canadian Timberlands team has worked with the nonprofit environmental organization Ducks Unlimited Canada to help preserve wetland habitats through collaborative, sustainable solutions. In March, we formally signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding that extends our partnership and will provide our foresters with important data to enhance our sustainable forest management practices in duck habitats.
