Last year, when Weyerhaeuser announced a new partnership with American Forests to expand its Tree Equity program into smaller, more rural communities, the best way to celebrate seemed obvious: A tree-planting event in Ruston, Louisiana, one of three of our operating communities selected to pilot the innovative program. “We weren’t just planting trees,” says Gary Hill, region manager of North Louisiana-Arkansas Timberlands. “We were building connections, building pride in the community and building futures.” Learn more about this partnership and how it promotes environmental education and careers, including through the Ruston kick-off and also the next tree-planting event this Friday, April 14, in Tacoma, Washington! #sustainableforestry
Weyerhaeuser was recently recognized by the Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council as its 2022 Business Supporter of the Year for our partnership in providing program support and land access. Jeffrey Grogan, planning forester, and Lyndcy Patrick, land use manager, have worked closely with the Oregon nonprofit over the past several years, supporting its mission to help private landowners improve water quality and fish habitat through restoration, monitoring, education and stewardship. “Lyndcy and the Weyerhaeuser crew have been amazing to work with,” says Amanda Gilbert, CFWWC executive director. “Business Supporter of the Year recognizes a company that has gone above and beyond in supporting our organization, and Weyerhaeuser is highly deserving of this honor.”
Because more than 90 percent of Canada's forests are on public land, the millions of acres we manage are primarily the responsibility of provincial governments and fall within traditional territories of many Indigenous communities. In order to sustainably grow, harvest and replant trees on this land, Weyerhaeuser and other private entities have to earn the right to enter into long-term forest management agreements that typically last 20 years. “Being an FMA holder is a huge responsibility, and we’re proud to continue to hold two of Alberta’s 21 FMAs,” says Lyle Dechief, Alberta provincial forester. “We remain committed to sustainable, responsible forest practices for the benefit of current and future generations.” #sustainableforestry #TheWeyerhaeuserWay
Over the past five years, Yuzhen Li, a remote sensing scientist/statistician based at our Seattle Headquarters, has been developing an innovative water-mapping tool that produces high-resolution stream channel networks and wet area mapping layers for millions of acres of our land and adjacent areas. This tool is like using a giant magnifying glass to look at our land — even under the forest canopy, Yuzhen says — and it provides unprecedented clarity for our forest harvest, planning and silviculture operations, as well as environmental compliance and our sustainability and certification processes. Learn more about Yuzhen, one of our 2022 Innovator of the Year honorees, and her incredible work on this innovative mapping tool! #innovation #TheWeyerhaeuserWay
Last fall, our Aviation team partnered with our Oregon Mid-Coast and Regeneration groups to collect a bumper crop of noble fir cones from Oregon’s coast range. Our helicopter pilots worked with ground crews to safely collect over 3,200 bushels of cones — totaling around 70 million seeds! We’ll grow those seeds in our nurseries in Washington and Oregon over the next decade. When the resulting seedlings are one to two years old, they'll be planted at high elevations on our Western tree farms or sold to Christmas tree farmers, where they’ll grow for another seven to 10 years before bringing holiday cheer to homes across the country.
“It’s been a whirlwind of new experiences, but I couldn’t be happier with the trajectory of my career,” says Zaina Gates, now an area manager for our Piedmont Area in Georgia. “I went into forestry so I could help make sure forests still exist for future generations, and now I feel like I’m achieving that goal.” Learn more about Zaina and her career journey with Weyerhaeuser. #TheWeyerhaeuserWay
Our lumber mill in Philadelphia, Mississippi recently awarded the Neshoba County Sheriff’s Office with a Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund grant to support the purchase of a thermal imaging drone as an important safety tool. “We recognize and appreciate all that the Neshoba County Sheriff’s Office does on a daily basis to make our community a safe place for us all to live and work,” says Kris Robertson, mill manager.
This September, the Seaside School District 10 in Seaside, Oregon, held an official ribbon-cutting for the new combination high school and middle school, which is now located safely outside the tsunami inundation zone along the coast. Back in 2016, Weyerhaeuser donated 80 acres of land to the district to support the relocation efforts, and we were excited to be on hand to celebrate the official opening of the new schools.
Sneak Peek into a Lumber Facility Follow the story of logs that arrive at our sawmill in Longview, Washington — from the log yard through the merchandiser; then cut into boards and trimmed for length; sorted and stacked; finished to exact dimensions in the planer mill; scanned and graded; stacked, squared and strapped, and then shipped to our customers by truck, train and ocean vessels.
