Woolpert Structural Team Leader Peter Giessel, PE, SE, is among the national speakers presenting Friday at the Structural Engineers Association of Ohio's annual two-day conference in Columbus. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQMHp Peter will discuss the “Design of the Cincinnati SkyWheel Platform,” examining the firm’s work with SkyWheel Newport in Newport, Ky. Woolpert is designing the base structure for the 20-story entertainment venue, which will hold a roughly 160-ton SkyWheel manufactured in the Netherlands. The base structure will be built similar to a highway overpass, with an open footprint to allow for the free flow of traffic underneath, while not degrading the structural integrity of the levee. The SkyWheel will be a major attraction in the Festival Park area of Newport on the Levee, across the Ohio River from Cincinnati.

Woolpert Research and Development Facilitator Nadja Turek, PE, LEED AP BDC, GGP, ENV SP spent last week at Scott Air Force Base serving as a mentor for the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) STEM Camp. This newest addition to the SAME STEM camp system hosted 40 campers in a hands-on field environment with real engineering activities and challenges. Nadja, who also serves as Woolpert’s sustainability expert, said she was “blown away” by the camp and the dedication of the Scott Field Post volunteers involved. “My students said many times that this was the best STEM camp any had attended,” Nadja said. “The camp was incredibly hands-on, team-oriented and fun!” SAME holds multiple camps of varying curriculum throughout each year, often in partnership with the U.S. Armed Forces, and has for almost 20 years. Students learn about STEM careers in and for the military, both active duty and civilian. For info, visit http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQmMx
