It’s once again Pride Month and we’re here, as always, to remind you that you belong. Full stop. Whether you identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community or as an ally, the more we learn, the better we can become together. Here are some stories from our OUT employee resource group.
We are once again honored to be named one of the Best Places to Work by Glassdoor. Every day we get to work with the immensely smart, kind and wonderful humans that helped us achieve this. Thank you, friends. 🥳 http://gldr.co/BPTW
"I wanted to share with you the wonderful opportunity Slack has given me to give back to my community. Five and a half years ago I was forced to flee my home country because of homophobia. When I arrived in the U.S. I hid, working in fast food and fearing a return to my country. Then I won the protection of asylum, the right to stay here thanks to Oasis Legal Services. I could finally embrace my life and return to the work I love, designing software. I found a community of friends, and eventually I found Slack which is extremely welcoming of the LGBTQ+ community." — Gerson Garcia Pineda, Sr. Software Engineer, Test Automation, he/him
"My colleagues are some of the most caring, curious and hard working people I've ever met. There's a constant pursuit to be better humans -- for each other, for ourselves, and for our community. We can all be exactly who we are and uniqueness is encouraged." — Meaghan Riley, Customer Experience Agent, she/her
"Slack is an extremely accepting company. This is felt throughout starting from Stewart and his Senior Leadership team. I'm proud to be empowered as the Head of Recruiting to ensure we hire the most diverse talent regardless of race, gender identity, age, ethnicity, military status, disability, or sexual orientation." — Rich Laws, Head of Recruiting, he/him
"Pride is an opportunity to remember the incredible queer folks who have paved the way for us to live our lives out of the shadows. It is our duty to continue that fight, and to say the names of those that history would rather have forgotten, especially our trans siblings of color." — Nadia Gathers, Program Manager, Incident Comms, they/them
"To me, Pride month means queer visibility. It wasn't too long ago that being queer simply wasn't a concept. Now it's incredible how colorful the world is becoming. Pride also means celebrating ourselves and the obstacles that we have and are currently overcoming." — Alex Goodkind, Backend Engineering Intern, they/them
"There aren’t many times in a career where you have the opportunity to be a part of something as big as changing the way people work. I was initially drawn to that mission, and it’s what still gets me excited every day. I’m also very proud to work for a company that truly cares about diversity and belonging. Many companies talk about diversity and supporting underrepresented groups, but I haven’t seen it truly lived in such a genuine way like it is at Slack." — Megan Cristina, Chief Privacy Officer, she/her
"To connect communities and give them a space to build culture, get things done, and find purpose is operating beyond the constraints of software. I've seen how we've reacted to COVID-19 and racial injustice, taken care of our employees, and given users a place to find solace, inspiration, and love - I couldn't be prouder to work here." — Joseph Lam, Senior Business Strategy Associate, he/him
"I'm proud to work for a company that values inclusion and embraces individuality - I don't have to tiptoe around or be afraid of sharing who I am. Slack is an incredibly supportive environment and genuinely encourages employees to bring their whole selves to work." — Susanna Rizzo, Senior Event Specialist, she/her
