Pros

Predictable job. Decent benefits. Vast majority of the front line managers and teammates were great to work with.

Cons

Department is rife with games and favoritism. Laughable people promoted and hired into high places, with no tangible knowledge or skills. Most (though not all) of my direct HR colleagues and bosses were faking their roles, with no real expertise or substance to back it up. The higher up you got, the more generally inept people became. The culture itself is very individualistic. Don't expect to get help or do many projects that involve a lot of teamwork. Plenty of backstabbing and in-fighting. Management will throw you under the bus at a whim if it's the slightest bit politically beneficial to them. Shockingly petty culture as well. Everyone's feelings are very easily hurt here and people will issue complaints over non-existent matters. I'm obviously sensitive to harassment, discrimination, etc., as these are real problems that must be addressed, but so many of the things people would complain about here were simply made up in an effort to retaliate against someone else. In general, I've never worked with so many children occupying adult bodies. There is also rampant discrimination and favoritism within the HR department, nullifying it's own internal credibility. They don't practice what they preach at all. Beyond HR, the company is really bad at soliciting and implementing feedback from frontline employees, most of whom work their tails off and are underpaid vs. the market. It's a very top-down environment, where you just kind of keep your head down, do your thing well, and try to stay off the radar to maintain your job and avoid being caught up in layoffs. Politics play a huge role in success here. Upper management are largely inept. Very reactive, risk adverse environment. Very procedural. Plenty of toxic, miserable people. You can do better for yourself and your career.

Pros

-Stable job, very hard to get fired so long as you try. -Decent 401k plan (company matches 100% up to 6%) -SOME departments get weekly work from home and casual days. -Getting hired from outside allows you to negotiate with market value for pay and benefits. -Unlimited sick days.

Cons

-Pay and especially raises are meager and unpredictable. This year raises barely surpassed inflation and bonuses were 1/4 of the previous year. -Vacation time is limited to 2 weeks until you've served for 5 years when you will get 1 additional week. No buying days, rolling them over, etc. -Vastly differing experiences from manager to manager in the same department. Some will allow work from home, and will fight to get you raises and bonuses while others do not. -Work/Life balance is poor, you will be expected to respond to emails and work on weekends and holidays to avoid even a very short outage. -Management seems to be at war with employees. They love to keep information from you that is a direct concern to the individual's work/life balance and stress levels at work. -Another review said you wait for someone else to retire or die to move up. I agree with this. Also, whether you make it to management or not is determined very early on. There are "chosen ones" that will climb ladders astonishingly quick. -"Build trust and respect" is one of the factors of success here. This seems to only apply to the peons. -Lastly, you will be given a title here that in no way reflects your job or duties. For example, everyone in IT is an "analyst" of some level

Pros

-None -YOU DO NOT HAVE THE TOOLS YOU NEED TO SUCCEED -This is not a real sales job, it should actually be called 'Magician' because they are expecting you to do the impossible -Company car, phone, etc is NOT worth the stress that you will endure as a sales rep for Glidden Home Depot

Cons

-You are not allowed to TOUCH your competition, Behr. Never have I ever worked for a company where the competition complains to store management if you 'go after their customer' -Glidden paint got the short end of the stick when it came down to Glidden vs Behr -You are a sales rep, expected to sell product, that is NEVER in stock -You are told to order product and DTJ(direct to job) since product is not in stock in the store, BUT, a 3rd party freight company delivers your product so there is no accountability for timeliness, customer satisfaction, etc -There is virtually NO ADVERTISING done for your product while your competitors(Sherwin Williams, Behr, Ben Moore) are splashed across tv, radio, billboards, etc yet management expects you to sell product because you are 'training store associates' in the great value of your paint when customers are being brainwashed to pick anyone but you. -You make sales calls and land customers but when these customers go to a store to buy your product there is no inventory, mgmt. expects them to want to hold your hand and call you EVERY TIME they need say 8 buckets of paint. -Marketing keeps coming out with silly gimmicks to market our product instead of investing more in major brand awareness in tv and radio. -If it seems like I am ranting, it is because I am; working for this company Glidden Home Depot was the WORST career decision I have ever made, save yourself.
