Pros

recognizable brand, exposure to high-level projects

Cons

While the firm presents itself as progressive and client-focused, the internal culture was anything but inclusive. It often felt like a “country club” environment, where leadership and advancement were dominated by a narrow personality type, and anyone who didn’t fit that mold felt overlooked. Entry-level employees were grossly underpaid for Manhattan’s cost of living, with full-time staff qualifying for Medicaid despite working for a major financial institution. Constructive feedback and mentorship were rare, as management preferred to wait until performance reviews instead of offering consistent guidance. The company also maintained a surveillance-style workplace, tracking employees’ key-card swipes, including how many times they entered, exited, or used the restroom, which created an atmosphere of mistrust rather than professionalism. When concerns about harassment were raised, HR took a performative approach, requiring the individual to complete a “training video” rather than addressing the behavior directly. The firm also engaged in greenwashing after acquiring Greenworks Lending and branding it as Nuveen Green Capital. In practice, lending decisions had little to do with actual energy efficiency or sustainability outcomes, just repackaged Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy (C-PACE) loans labeled as “green” for optics. There are talented, hardworking people here, but the culture rewards appearances over integrity and image over impact.
